Gold, as you probably know, is a metal and Karat is a unit used to indicate the purity of Gold metal. Gold traders refer to pure Gold (100% Gold) as "bullion" but in Gold jewelry the term Karat is used to define purity of Gold. This is commonly referred to as "Karated Gold" and 100% pure gold is labelled as 24 Karat Gold. 100% pure gold (24 Karat Gold) is very beautiful and imperishable and it doesn't corrode, rust or lose its luster.

However, 100% pure gold (24K Gold) is extremely soft and not suitable for Jewelry purposes. To give Gold some strength to make gold suitable for Jewelry purposes, alloying elements such as Nickel, Zinc, Copper, Silver etc. are added to Gold. The K or KT are symbols used to represent Karat. Thus

18K or 18 Kt Gold Jewelry has 75% pure Gold in it and the rest are alloying elements [ (18/24) x 100 = 75% ]. In other words, if you buy four (4) ounces of 18K gold jewelry, it will have three (3) ounces of pure gold in it and one (1) ounce of alloying elements.

14K or 14 Kt Gold jewelry has 58.3% pure Gold in it and the rest are alloying elements [ (14/24) x 100 = 58.3% ] and so on.

18K, 14K and 10K jewelry is the most widely used gold jewelry though 18K jewelry is still a bit too soft for everyday use.

It is important to remember that price of Gold Jewelry is not dependent on its Karat alone. Other factors such as Craftsmanship and reputation of the Jeweler may significantly affect the price of Gold Jewelry.
