How To Select The Right Gift For An Elderly Person
Author: Lilly Renomp
Do you find shopping for a gift for your Grandma and Grandma a daunting task? If they're like most elderly people, they
already own everything. These elderly individuals probably already own way too many knick-knacks, gizmos, tools,
gadgets and trinkets. Shopping for food items for this age group can also be way too tricky. Many elderly have food
limitations like low salt, no white flour, low sugar, low fat and so on. So, it's best to stay away from food gifts.
Since the activities of the elderly are also limited, you also need to stay away from buying entertainment and other
type of exciting activities.
Your plight is shared by many and you too shall overcome! The fact is, the most valuable gift you can give to an
elderly individual is the gift of time. In the later stages of life the desire for possessions are put on the back
burner. Elderly people don't see well, don't hear well and are often tired, frustrated and alone. They are living in a
period of their lives reserved for reflection. They frequently spend many hours thinking about their family and
friends. Of all of the gifts that you could give, your companionship and service will be best remembered.
How do you provide this gift of time?
As a holiday approaches, you don't need to frantically search for the right gift for Grandpa and Grandma or for
your elderly aunt. Instead, make a conscious effort to offer the gift of time. Put a mark on your calendar to
commit that a set amount of time on that date with an elderly individual. Share a warm drink or hot beverage
together and simply visit, even if it means hearing the same story for the hundredth time. Time can also be shared by
you taking that person to a doctor's appointment, the grocery store or on a visit to a friend in a nursing home or
in a hospital.
Can get over the feeling that you have to give something that can be wrapped with a bow? How about organizing a
family activity like a yard clean-up party at the elderly person's home! This activity is even more fun if you
present a fancy coupon inside a gold box stuffed with hearts and each family member's picture. This gift of service will
really be appreciated on party day, a birthday or a holiday.
If you live very far from the loved elderly person, give a gift of a long-distance calling card. Don't stop there -
make sure you also arrange to call that person on a prearranged date at a certain time to spend some great time
chatting over the phone.
