What are Feeds, Feed Readers and What can they do for You?
Feeds and Feed readers are a relatively new phenomenon and they are becoming very popular.
They are becoming popular as they help you to keep up to date on the web
content you care about. This is best explained by a simple example:
Let us say that you want to know whenever we add a new discount coupon or deal
to our Online
Discount Coupons and Special Deals department which we do almost everyday and sometimes
several times a day. Let us also say that you have a favorite Online Newspaper
which you read to keep yourself up to date on news, and you also regularly visit
a jokes site to get a chuckle, and another web site for whatever interests you
and on and on whatever your interests may be.
Now you could keep track of the above web sites the old fashion way - book mark
them and visit them! But that is very tedious and time consuming. And you may
still miss the latest content as the sites might have added new content after
your visit. The Feed Readers come to the rescue!
With feeds and feed reader, you don't need to visit every web site you want yourself
updated about, the feeds and feed readers do it for you. How do feeds and feed reader do that?
We won't get into the technical details as you don't need to worry about that
(let the techies worry about that) just like when you drive a car you don't need to worry as to how a car is
manufactured or how it actually works. All you need to know is how to drive a
car and you can use the car (if you have a valid license, of course!). So we will
show you how to use feeds with a feed reader. And the good news is that most of the feed
readers are free and you don't need a license to use one (Ha, Ha, Ha).
There are many feed readers available on the Internet. We have listed many above
and most of them are free though some charge a small fee. Google Reader and My
Yahoo are definitely free, so for this example we will use Google Reader though
you may choose whichever suits your interests.
To use a Google reader you will need a Google account. You already have a Google
account if you use Gmail, Google groups or any other of their services. In
this case, you don't need to do anything else, you are set to use the Google reader.
But if don't have an account with them, you can create one for free. Once you
have an account, log in to the reader and add the feeds of the sites you want to keep track
of. As soon as you add sites feeds to the reader, it will start showing recent
headlines and a small detail for each headline from that site. And then the
reader keeps visiting those sites gathering the updates. The process is almost
real time.

Thus you can glance at all the up to date headlines in your reader without
the need to personally visit the sites. If a headline interests you and you want
to know more details, you just click on the headline and the website page opens
for you to read all the details. Thus a feed reader is a tool that helps you to
stay up to date about the web sites you want to keep yourself up to date about
without the need for you to actually visit each site thereby saving you your
precious time.
Of course, a feed reader can only help you keep informed about a site if that
site offers a feed. Most sites, including ours, offer feeds and many others are
joining in. Again, you don't need to worry about how the site feeds are actually
generated, let the techies worry
about that. You just need to know how to add a site feed to your feed reader.
So to get started with feed readers, here is a step by step procedure. The
procedure is valid for any feed but for this example we are assuming that you
want to add our Discount Coupons and Special Deals feed to the Google Reader (because you will be taken
away from this page when you follow the following procedure, you may want to
copy the procedure to a text editor like Notepad):
1. Near the top of this page, click on Google Reader under the Feed for Discount
Coupons and Specials heading.
2. As soon as you click, you will be taken to Google Reader page where it will
show our Feed title and its description and you will
have the option to log in to the Google reader or sign up. Actually, the Google
site gives you two choices: to log into Google Desktop or Google Reader. For the
purpose of this procedure, just ignore that desktop thing. At this stage it will
be a good idea to book mark the Google Reader page for easy login in future.
3. If you have any Google account already, use that user name and password to
login and if you don't have any account, just sign up and log in.
4. As soon as you log in, you will be asked if you want to add our Discount
Coupons and Specials feed to your reader. Click yes and you are done! Almost immediately you will see
the latest headlines from our Discount Coupons and Specials dept in your reader.
5. Use the procedure above to add any other feed you are interested in.
6. From now on, whenever you are logged in to the Google Reader, you will see the latest
headlines from the feeds that you have added to the reader.
7. And if a headline interests you, you can click on "Show Original
Content" on Google reader to read the full details about that headline.
8. Enjoy your feeds and feed reader!
